Four: Image-Frustration

The Melodrama of the Incessant Critic, Disdainful Lover, Diamond in the Rough, Beast of Beauty and the Beast, Science of Dignity

The embodiment of what is most valued internally as a direct contrast point to everything else. Chasing the ideal and living between perpetual dissatisfaction and connection with the ideal.

#4 is fixated on severing aspects of themselves that are incongruent with a pure and essential quality that they are protecting. Moving from constant state of emotional despair into the protection of a venerated value.

This type withdraws from the heart center’s need to recognize itself in "easy" and externalized markers of value and worthiness in chase of an ideal form of value that is often too abstract and personal to be understood and interfaced with interpersonally.

This creates a severe sense of separation between the internalized sense of worth and value and the external world. The layers of separation they feel between their inner self and what can be expressed, and consequently, all external qualities are constantly judged and distinguished to be cast out and belittled if incongruency is perceived.

Love and worthiness is something that this type believes to be tied to the capacity to experience and endure the pain and darkness that is connected to itt. Thus, they engulf themselves in the negativity to build a individualized symbolic pathway to the pure and essential that could only be seen and understood by those that are "worthy" of seeing it through. In this process lies the core flaw of type 4 as they believe they can only love themselves if they live through the pain required to prove their worthiness  -- creating a vulnerable masochism under their otherwise self-assured demeanor.

hyper fixation on an artificial experience that is meant to be created to define the ultimate meaning.

-self sacrificial to beauty. cutting the self down completely to alter their existence.

what is real to the 4 is not reality as it is. reality to the 4 is this artificial farce of meaning they are always building. There is no home base for immersion into experience in the same way that 9 reaches wholeness. 4 is in a constant reaching toward the holy ideal of love that can only be reached through equal levels of pain that align to the value of the love desired — all resulting from a sense of separation from reality as it is.

Unlike 3's that believe worth and value is something to be attained through capacity, work and achievements, 4's shun such notions because of the belief that the external world is a weak conductor of depth and are loudly judgemental of most aspects of it. And unlike 2's that believe that by assuming the best in the world and people, you will increase anf affirm the best of values in human affairs, 4 believe that the individual's direct experience with its peculiar darkness is the only way to understand and embrace value.

Key Qualities

  • Highly opinionated on everything and refusal to engage with matters not in their interest

  • Extreme levels of internalized self-scrutiny and judgment without any external markers to support or deny them.

  • Projection of self standards on to others and grounds for rejection of their characters if not fundamentally aligned

  • Crafting the self to fit more and more closely to internalized values

  • Comes off as sour, bitter, or generally down in mood. Frustrated with people, things, and more quietly, themselves.

  • Consistently obsessed with specific qualities, art forms, or characteristics

  • Sees the path to beauty and love as requiring hardship and the negative realities of the self before those aspects can be truly loved and understood.

  • Putting blocks where connection can be made - unless the connection is highly personalized and fits into their image of what they want.

  • this type is glaringly obvious.

Key Question

  • Essential quality of self and the possibility of manifesting that without any error. Type fours are image-oriented in that they see themselves as the bearer of the task to “be” the person that embodies what is valued (each image type has a different frame of reference for how to define what is valued based on their Object Relation).

  • very internally sensitive and vulnerable. exterior is guarded and offensive.

  • Image-Frustration pushes to the head center to understand and dissect qualities of self to see what is the most foundational and true.

  • 4 rejects the need to act to change the internalized ideals to receive love, creating a distinct separation between the idea of self from the other.

  • Overly defined identity and sense of value/worthiness that acts as a gap between their internal self and their external manifestation, as well as themselves and those around them.

  • These types create layers upon layers of ways they separate their own feelings and identity from everything else to reduce contamination of worthiness between the internal self and all else.

  • Callback to original intent.

The Hidden Triads

  • Heart (2, 3, 4): Embodiment of the specific aspects of the self that are seen as valuable to the self. Rejection of everything that defies or contaminates that perception or experience. Active judgment of values.

  • Withdrawn (9, 4, 5): Protecting the part of the self that is seen as most worthy of love by obfuscating and symbolizing it in complex processes that only through engagement in difficulties, it could be seen. Disdain for externalized value metrics.

  • Frustration (1, 4 ,7): Driven by a constant feeling of lack and dissatisfaction with existence. Seeking to continuously put self through difficulties to craft experience and presence. Split between experiences of glory and hatred.

  • Reactive (4, 6, 8): Using negativity and rejection to prove the lack of essential quality in self and the world through subverting perceptions, opinions, and presentations. Affirmation through denial. Quick to opine with polarized perspective.

  • Desirability-Seeking (9, 2, 4): Seeking to become a unique place for the depth in love and passion to be expressed and rescued and nurtured from inside darkness.

Wings

  • 4w3: Authentic Spark: asserts sense of self to the world, more combative and immediately judging of values, aesthetics, and characteristics. Presentation of self as the ultimate point of value. The personhood is the answer.

  • 4w5: Moves away from the heart center’s need to be recognized, internalized values are abstracted from the self and reality. Cynicism toward the body and personhood being able to handle the intricacies of these inner aspects. More self-conflicted. Masks self as the totem for internal aspects that are valued

4 vs 3:

3’s contradiction = endless potential of self + no anchor  → must construct an image.

4’s contradiction = anchored inner image + lack of external congruence → must withdraw positivity and aggressively protect that image in reality.
